Panzer Dragoon remake is a updated version of the original classic released back in March 1995 on the Sega Saturn. Available on the PC, Switch, PS4/5 & the Xbox One, Xbox One X/S. Developed by Megapixel Studios & published by Forever Entertainment.
With Panzer Dragoon: Remake gameplay is quite simple, you the player control a Dragon that shoots everything in its path over 7 stages of classic action from the Sega Saturn days. Controls have been updated from the original & are more fluent. Each stage consists of shooting down enemies, ultimately reaching a boss at the end of the level. Technically, there’s 6 full stages as the ultimate boss is the 7th stage. Controls are simple RT LT spins the camera round as enemies come at you from the front, back & sides. A & B to shoot either with a gun or using the crosshair.
Keeping the crosshair pressed will lock onto multiple enemies at anyone time, taking them out with one shot. Boss fights are similar, targeting the right spots to shoot. Difficulty varies between easy, normal & hard but this doesn’t really matter as there’s a built in cheat system that allows the player to go through the game untouched with various cheat options that also does not affect achievements. As for the cheats, look it up yourself if you decide that’s the path for you.
GRAPHICS & SOUND
Graphics have been improved immensely from the Saturn version, but with today’s standards I would have liked to of seen maybe even more graphical enhancements, but they are still pleasing to the eye. With all the enemies on screen at anyone time, I experienced no slowdown what’s so ever on the Xbox One X version. To appreciate the remake fully the best thing to do is watch footage from the 1995 original. Audio is also pleasing with today’s technology, taking out opponents sounds crisp & the music as had an overhaul from its original and is pleasing to the ear.
There is no multiplayer in Panzer Dragoon, not even leader boards to compare stats with your friends list, but this doesn’t affect the game in the slightest.
Replay value there isn’t too much TBH apart from aiming for a higher grade at the end of each stage. I will state though playing the game on hard WITHOUT cheats enabled will extend the experience for casual players & those who have never experienced a Panzer Dragoon game before.
As a fan of the Panzer Dragoon series, this is a welcome edition to my game collection & one I will revisit myself as I am a fan of the games. Personally I really enjoyed going back and revisiting a classic with a paint job so to speak. With difficulty options for any player, this is a must for fans of any Panzer Dragoon game. Value for money is ok at time of this review Panzer Dragoon Remake will only set you back £20.99 which is a bargain for fans & the work put into the remake itself.
I’m scoring Panzer Dragoon Remake, a solid 7 out of 10.
